2005 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence

Langara College’s Library Classroom and Building was recognized as a winner of Canadian Architect’s 2005 Awards of Excellence.

Cobalt collaborated with Teeple Architects and Hancock Bruckner Eng + Wright Architcts to create a building that was not only visually striking but that also unified form and function. For example, the heavy mass structure serves as a heat sink and houses the building’s radiant heating/cooling system, while the roof is shaped to encourage natural ventilation, aided by a wind tower.

Through CBIP modeling, the 80,000 sq.ft. building shows 71% energy savings over the baseline building and 68% energy cost savings. This qualifies the building for the maximum $60,000 CBIP incentive and the full 10 points available for LEED EAc1 – a remarkable acheivement!
