Kwantlen University College: Building A and C
Building A and C are both on track to achieve Kwantlen’s LEED Gold targets and are aligned with its long-term vision of sustainable campus development.
The architectural and mechanical system configurations of Buildings A and C were designed to meet a variety of project goals. Complimenting Kwantlen’s sustainable campus development plan, design strategies were selected based on their ability to provide high levels of thermal comfort, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, sustainability, flexibility for future renovation, security, and ease of maintenance.
An additional objective for Building A included enhanced efficiency. The mechanical system of the new building was required to be so energy efficient that the combined energy consumption would be equal the building’s current usage.
The three-storey Building A will be renovated and expanded by an additional 56,170 ft 2. The three-storey Building C, which houses classrooms, student services and amenities, faculty and administration offices, will be expanded by 46,600 ft 2. The expansion will be connected to the existing building by an atrium and will serve as the new main entrance and gateway for community.
The designs include passive systems, such as natural wind driven ventilation, high usage of thermal mass, a high performance building envelope, and radiant slab heating and cooling with earth energy and renewable energy sources. Energy efficient design features include solar hot water systems and a heat reclamation system. All of these strategies contribute to reducing the amount of energy needed to condition the building and result in substantial energy savings.
