Price Waterhouse Coopers Place

The design team successfully delivered a high performance building with a sustainable focus, while creating a healthy work environment.

The Price Waterhouse Coopers Place is a 22-storey office tower located in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It is a combined office and retail building with two levels of underground parking and three ground level retail units spanning 300,000 ft 2. Project goals specified the design of an energy efficient facility that offers tenants a comfortable working environment.

Cobalt provided mechanical engineering services for the design of this large scale mixed used facility. Key strategies include the use of an energy efficient four-pipe fan coil system and high induction perimeter air diffusion. Careful systems design eliminated the need for energy to heat supply air during almost all of the building’s operating hours.

Systems were designed to allow each floor to operate independently without wasting unnecessary energy for unoccupied floors. Control was given to the individual tenants to enable separate zones using a web based system which interfaces with the building’s centralized systems. This configuration offers a comfortable, reliable, and energy efficient building space.

Overall, the design delivered results that matter. The mechanical design features resulted in a 20% reduction in energy consumption, while deliver precise control over indoor spaces. Tenants will continue to benefit from reduced operational costs, while each organization continues to enjoy the benefits of providing optimal working conditions for their most precious resource – their staff.
