Edgewater Casino
The implementation of a displacement air delivery system is the first occurrence of its kind at this scale in North America.
The Edgewater Casino is a 70,000 ft 2 two-storey casino located in downtown Vancouver. The Management Group wanted to create an attractive and contemporary atmosphere combined with the highest level of thermal comfort and indoor air quality. The casino mandated an overall goal of sustainability linked to operational savings, which is a challenge for the traditional energy intensive casino operations.
Cobalt provided mechanical design services for the Edgewater Casino to realize the project’s goals. One of the key features was an innovative double-skin façade created from the existing fully glazed exterior. This created a solution for the demanding solar loads, while achieving superior thermal comfort. The double skin system allows outdoor air to flow through and cool the space between the skins.
Energy efficiency and resultant cost savings were dramatically increased with a displacement delivery system. It is the first instance of this system type to be designed and installed in North America at this scale. With limited ductwork and low-static pressure, this delivery system reduces the energy required by fans to push air around the building.
Due to the large volume of guests and gamers, this type of facility requires large quantities of outside air. Cobalt selected demand ventilation to provide sufficient outdoor air supply in relation to the number of occupants in the building, which is monitored by CO 2 measurements. Varying the amount of ventilation required increased the overall energy efficiency by reducing the amount of supply air to be conditioned while delivering optimal indoor air quality.
