CFB Shearwater
This $100M project consists of classrooms, simulators and training aids for maritime helicopters.
The Department of National Defence’s CFB Shearwater Maritime Helicopter Support Facilities represents the second-oldest military aerodrome in Canada. The design of this project will meet the current needs of the defence department and future defence requirements. This facility will contain space for flying squadrons, air maintenance squadrons and a helicopter operational test and evaluation facility.
Cobalt was retained to provide mechanical consulting services for this design/build projects to realize the goal of designing to meet LEED Silver targets if certification was pursued. Key design features include a district heating system that uses a central steam plant, which provides heat to the facility via medium pressure steam through an underground piping system.
Other key design features include a highly efficient four-pipe fan coil HVAC system that will minimize wasted energy and exhaust heat recovery through water-to- water heat pumps. A radiant slab heating system in the hangar floors control thermal conditions. This water-based system will increase energy efficiency and lead to improved occupant satisfaction.
The Department of National Defence is responding to the need for increased ecological responsibility. The combination of sustainable elements is estimated to require 33% less energy than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. This project will serve as an excellent example of the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting widespread environmental stewardship.
