Rotary Wing and Fixed Wing Hangars Building

The variety of systems designed for this project demonstrates the flexibility in delivering solutions tailored to meet the individual project requirements.

The Rotary and Fixed Wing Hangar Buildings form part of the only Canadian Air Base in British Columbia, CFB Comox. Construction began on this defence facility in 1942 and over time this 150,000 ft2 development has undergone restructuring and expansion to maintain the quality of the base responsible for the surveillance of Canada’s busiest coastal waters.

Cobalt provided mechanical engineering services for the two Safety and Rescue buildings which include a perimeter ceiling radiant heating system with variable volume reheat. An Aircraft Fire Fighting protection system was designed to strategically fill the hangar with foam to protect it from irreparable damage in the case of a fire. Other key design features include a compressed air system that powers pneumatic tools and a paint booth designed to paint aircraft parts on site.
A radiant heat system is also installed in the floor where the hangars are stored to deliver increased thermal comfort for the occupants while being highly efficient with energy consumption.Water considerations used in the design include controlled flow roof drainage which significantly slows down the stormwater. Low flow plumbing fixtures were also used to reduce potable water consumption.

This project serves to highlight how innovation and high level collaboration can be used to deliver sustainable outcomes within a facility that has traditionally relied on conventional systems. It also demonstrates the CFB’s commitment to embracing progressive designs that will enhance its ability to serve the community abroad.
