Whistler Athletes' Village DES Feasibility Study

The development of a District Energy System will support the long-term sustainable development vision of The Resort Municipality of Whistler.

As an integral component of Whistler’s long-term sustainable development plan, suitable energy options must be evaluated to support the upcoming 2010 Winter Games. Terasen Utility Services partnered with the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) and the Athlete Development Corporation to construct a District Earth-Energy System (DES).

The goal of the DES is to provide space and domestic water heating to the Whistler Legacy Development, which will serve as the Athletes’ Village during the 2010 Olympic Games. The partnership goal is to deliver energy sustainably congruent with the overall vision and objectives of the RMOW.

Cobalt was retained to develop a conceptual design of a modular, thermally efficient, economically feasible DES. It is intended to use several low-grade renewable energy sources, enable seasonal thermal energy storage, and be adaptable to future expansion. As electricity will be the primary source of power operating the DES at its initiation, the future adoption of alternative energy sources is possible once the system is designed.
